Kataragama,a popular pilgrim center for Buddhist and Hindus, is held its annual festival in July/August in honor to the God Skanda. The festival is an extravaganza of self-mutilation during which followers perform a variety of gruesome acts to show their devotion to the God; ramming across burning coals or most dramatically suspending themselves from scaffolding by means of butchers hooks looped through their skin.
